My friend's grandfather came to America from Eastern Europe(東歐）.After being processed(移民入境檢查）at Ellis Island, he went into a cafeteria(自助餐廳）in Lower Manhattan to get something to eat. He sat down at a table and waited for someone to take his order(點菜）. But nobody came to him.Later a woman with a plate full of food sat down opposite him and told him how to a cafeteria worked.

我朋友的祖父從東歐來到美國。在埃利斯島接受移民入境檢查後，便到曼哈頓下城區的壹家自助餐廳吃東西。他坐在桌邊等著服務員來點菜，但是沒人過來。後來，壹個婦女拿著滿滿壹盆吃的坐到他對面，還告訴他這個餐廳吃飯的規矩。

"Start out at that end," she said,"Just go along the line and pick out what you want .At the other end they'll tell you how much you have to pay."

“從那頭開始，”她說，“跟著隊伍，把妳要的都拿上，到了盡頭，他們會告訴妳要付多少錢的。”

"I soon learned that's how everything works in America,"the grandfather told my friend,"Life is like a cafeteria here.You can get anything you want only if you are willing(願意）to pay the money. You can even get success(成功）,but you'll never get it if you wait for someone to bring it to you. You have to get up and get it yourself.

“我馬上搞懂了美國的壹切規矩。”朋友的祖父對我朋友說，“生活就像這裏的自助餐廳。只要妳願意付錢，妳就可以得到任何想要的東西，但要等別人拿來給妳，那妳就永遠拿不到。妳只有起身自己拿。”
